> **Deprecated (October 2026).** The plan to develop and build entirely in a VM was dropped: it could not cover the QuickBooks (QBI) project and some other parts. Releases are built directly on the workstation, with the backup laptop as the fallback (see `../modernization/PROJECT-OVERVIEW.md`). The tool list and install commands below are still a usable checklist for setting up either machine.
> **Purpose**: Step-by-step instructions to create a portable Windows virtual machine containing the complete AyaNova v8 build environment. This VM can run on Windows or Linux hosts.
Written February 2026 for the .NET 8 build; updated October 2026 for the .NET 10 port (AyaNova 8.3.0): the .NET 10 SDK replaces the .NET 8 SDK.
